With the intermediate school housing only fourth and fifth grades, our students quickly find that in this small setting they have a voice; they have a unique opportunity to participate in clubs, sports, and student government, among other activities. Students are also encouraged to take on leadership roles that truly impact the life of each student, as well as the life of the intermediate school.
Our weekly character education program focuses on being friendship focused (BFF) and is led by our intermediate school counselor, with support from our student activities coordinator. Students experience a variety of team building activities where students build trust, focus on cooperation, and overcome obstacles. As students learn to be positive and productive citizens, students also learn the importance of servant leadership by participating in Service Day. This is an opportunity for students to travel to local nonprofit organizations not only to help and serve others but also to learn about the many service opportunities available in the community.
Clubs and other activities are also introduced in the intermediate school. This allows for leadership opportunities as well as opportunities for students to explore other interests outside of the structured academic setting. Some of these opportunities include Student Council, Checkers, Drama, Drums and Rhythm, Computer, BNN (Brookstone Network News), Math Team, Math Club, Technology Fair, Geography Bee, Spelling Bee, Paw Prints Student Newspaper, Science Fair, and Safety Patrol. In addition, cub sports and enrichment programs are available after school through Brookstone Extended.
The faculty, staff, and coaches of the intermediate school have created an amazing place where students are encouraged to step out of their comfort zone and take risks both socially and academically. These young ladies and gentlemen find that after two years in the intermediate school they have the confidence to take on all the amazing opportunities awaiting them in the middle school.
