@ Brookstone - January 23, 2012
Posted: Monday, January 23, 2012

Join Dr. Brian Kennerly tonight at 7 p.m. in the Turner Center for an All School Parent Meeting. This is a wonderful opportunity to get an overview of what is happening in the classrooms as well as on the Brookstone campus.

Students will be dismissed early on Tuesday, January 31, for a faculty in-service day.

The Sustainability Club invites you to join them at Oxbow Meadows on Monday, January 23, at 5:45 for the film GROW! The highlighted farmers, Chris and Jenny Jackson, are local and often sell at the Columbus Farmer's Market on Broadway. They also hosted the Dinners on the Farm for the Brookstone Auction. Click here to see the flyer.

The deadline to submit to the Istanbul Art and Essay Contest is January 27, 2012.  This year's theme is: 1 billion hungry: what's your role?  Please email Anna Flournoy for more information: aflournoy@brookstoneschool.org

A Summer Adventure in England for Middle School Students!  (Ages 11-14) - Take advantage of a unique and exciting travel and sports experience for the Middle School student (ages 11-14), July 8 -29, 2012. Stay in England for three weeks at Charterhouse School, an exclusive and historic campus, participate in on-campus English sports, experience London theatre, and watch history come alive as students travel to amazing places. Contact Cassandra Kennon, ckennon@brookstoneschool.org, 706-243-3590 (office). Office is located downstairs in Kirven Media Center.

Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten Readiness: More than Letters and Numbers - Thursday, February 2, 7:00-8:30 p.m., Turner Center. Please join us as veteran educator Bobbie Lencke returns to Brookstone to deliver her delightful, informative lecture on the early childhood years.  In the past few weeks, Mrs. Lencke has received rave reviews for her talk at Atlanta's Westminster Schools and The Cathedral Preschool, as well as Decatur United Methodist Preschool. For more than 40 years, Mrs. Lencke has been involved in early childhood education, and for 25 years she has lectured extensively on PK and K readiness in the Atlanta area. This event is open to the entire Columbus community at no charge. Come and bring a friend!

Don's miss the fun on January 26th - the annual Spaghetti Supper and Bingo. The sale of tickets will begin at 5:30. Supper is free and will be from 6:00 until 7:00; Bingo begins at 7:00. Bingo cards are $5; raffle tickets are $1.

Please, please, please send in your donations!! Remember all of those Christmas items that you can't use...we can use them!! Bingo collection boxes are in the lower, middle and upper school offices.

Also, we need volunteers! It is a fun and easy job to sell tickets and bingo cards at the door or to serve spaghetti in the kitchen. This is an easy way to help your school!!

One of the many forms of communication at Brookstone is through the Parent Panels at each school level. These panels serve as a forum for parents and principals to share their ideas, concerns, and suggestions about Brookstone. Each January, a "Willingness to Serve" form is sent to parents asking if they would be willing to serve the following school year. Please note - the deadline to return the form is Monday, February 3.

Olga Jenkins is looking for parent volunteers to help with set up and food distribution on International Day, March 22. Parents are needed to set up tables at 8AM in the quad and help distribute food and "man the tables" from 9AM-11AM and 11AM - 2PM. About 20-25 parents are needed to coordinate this event. Please contact parent liaison, Hannah Vongsavang at vongsavang@gmail.com. Parents wishing to lend special objects and items from other countries for the event should also contact Hannah. Remember items should be appropriate to young audiences and objects of value are the responsibility of the owner (So if you're worried about it, volunteer to stay and show it off). Thank you for your help!

Spring Book Fair dates have been set for May 7-9 in store at Barnes and Noble. Summer Book lists will be ready for advanced ordering. Remember that NOOK sales and Gift Cards count towards Book Fair totals, but you MUST indicate you are purchasing for Brookstone's book fair at checkout. Start thinking about your graduating students and friends, a NOOK tablet makes a great gift!

The Upper School Day of Service took place on Friday, January 13.  Following an inspiring talk by Mrs. Lula Huff, the students served with twenty-one different organizations benefitting our community. Thanks to all the faculty members, parents, and alumni who worked with the students. To see a photo gallery of the activities, go to http://www.brookstoneschool.org/page/1211/2794/0/62376/

The Lower and Intermediate School students will prepare Sunshine Baskets during the week of February 6-10. This year we will be taking the focus off of the monetary gifts emphasizing thoughtful and caring gestures—personal notes, cards, pictures, handmade items, etc. More information will soon be coming from the classroom teachers.

Seniors and Parents of Seniors: The College Counseling Office and the Servant Leadership Department are excited to present a very special program for all seniors and their parents. Dr. Scott Walker, from Mercer University, will speak to seniors and their parents on the topic of "The Journey to Adulthood" on Thursday, February 9 and Friday, February 10. This program will address the approaching significant rite of passage for our seniors and their parents. Be sure to put these dates and details on your calendar.
