The Brookstone Learning Center

The Brookstone Learning Center is committed to helping students become successful and independent learners.  Recognizing that students learn in a variety of ways, the Learning Center offers small group classes and individual sessions to help students meet the demands of a rigorous academic curriculum.

Opened in September of 1983 with the generous donation of the Carter - Thompson Family, the Brookstone Learning Center has improved the educational experience of children at Brookstone School.

The Brookstone Learning Center

  • provides a network of teachers, students, and parents working together to nurture and encourage the academic potential in every student.
  • offers classes to improve organizational and study skills
  • expands learning strategies
  • helps in academic areas
  • prepares students for tests and writing assignments
  • administers an individualized battery of developmental tests to assist in evaluating the educational needs of a student and determine strategies to be used by both the student and teacher to help the student become a successful learner

Upper school students take elective classes through the Learning Center to develop study skills and learning strategies.

Middle school students are scheduled for academic support in small groups and meet daily as a part of their regular schedule.

Lower school students receive academic support in many areas including, reading, math, and handwriting. Individual and small group sessions are scheduled according to student needs. An enrichment program for accelerated math students provides small group problem solving sessions.

Upper School students "drop in" or make appointments with Learning Center staff to formulate study plans and set academic goals and strategies for attaining goals.  Individual meetings assist with time management and organizational skills allowing students to successfully complete projects, assignments, or homework independently.

An after school tutorial program is coordinated to pair upper school student volunteers with lower, middle, and upper school students for help with homework or academic support.

The Brookstone Tutorial Program provides quality tutoring services for students who need additional instruction over and above regular classroom and teacher instruction, Learning Center services, and parental assistance. This tutorial is intended to offer additional support to students and is not meant to replace attendance at regular tutorials offered by academic teachers.  All tutoring of Brookstone students on campus must be arranged and monitored by the Brookstone Learning Center.  A student must be recommended by the classroom teacher or principal who will contact the Director of the Learning Center.  Once it is determined that the student requires services beyond those provided by the Learning Center, the Director of the Learning Center and the Tutorial Program Coordinator will collaborate in finding the most qualified tutor for the student.

All sessions are conducted on a one-to-one basis with no group tutoring. The hourly rate for a tutoring session is $43.00. Tutorial services may be short or long term depending on the needs of the individual student.

Examples of Students Requiring Tutorial Services
A high school algebra student is struggling with a particular concept and needs more extensive remediation than can be provided in after school reviews and tutorials by the teacher.  The teacher contacts the Director of the Learning Center who then determines that the Learning Center is not equipped to work with the student.  The Tutorial Program Coordinator works with the teacher in finding a tutor and scheduling sessions with the goal of having the student become independent as soon as possible.

A seventh grader comes to Brookstone with a French background and has experienced no English grammar instruction.  Intensive work is needed to catch him up to his peers.  The Director of the Learning Center recommends a tutor who collaborates with the seventh grade Language Arts teacher.

A third grader is far behind in reading skills. He is working in the Learning Center, but needs more concentrated work and reinforcement of skills being taught in the classroom and the Learning Center.  The Learning Center teacher, classroom teacher, and tutor work closely together.

School life revolves around learning, and at Brookstone, learning happens everywhere. The school provides an environment that nurtures the courage to take a first step, to defend a friend, and to try something new.
