Lower School Sunshine Baskets Project

This project empowers students to brighten the day of a person that may be experiencing a crisis with the gift of a Sunshine Basket, a collection of cards and treats that represent the thought and care of the students.

The concept of a Sunshine Basket originated from our visiting author, Ronda Friend, who came to Brookstone School as part of a Literature Live Series.  In her book, Hats off to Heroes, Mrs. Friend introduces the notion of bringing sunshine to someone in need.  For the past three years, each Pre-K through 5th Grade class has prepared a sunshine basket full of cards and assorted items (depending on the needs of the individual) for someone experiencing a crisis situation.  While the baskets themselves are certainly a benefit to the Sunshine Basket recipients, the teachable moments and good feelings that arise through this caring act of service to others is priceless.

This year we will be taking a slightly different approach to Sunshine Baskets.  In past years, classes have collected items of need that may include books, small games, or even gift cards.  While everyone's generosity is astonishing, we would like to take the focus off of the monetary gifts this year and focus more on thought and caring gestures—personal notes, cards, pictures, handmade items, etc.  We want our students to understand that small caring acts can make a big difference and that material things are not the most important gifts.

Teresa Young, Jill Land and Hannah Vongsavang visited the SaMark Center at Wilson Apartment Community to deliver books collected during the Brookstone Book Fair.  The generous contributions of books helped their library grow and offer a great variety for the families that reside at Wilson Apartment Homes.
