Visual Arts

We believe that all students can learn to benefit from creative and divergent thinking that is taught in the visual arts.  We believe that students learn best through exploration and practice.  Our art classes will focus on process more than product to develop this type of thinking.  Students will be exposed to  a wide variety of media and artists to inspire them. Students will practice various techniques and methods to explore the vision of their designs.  Students will create works of art from observation and imagination creating work of their own voice while maintaining craftsmanship. Students will reflect on and present their work.

LOWER & INTERMEDIATE SCHOOL
Lower and Intermediate school art is all about igniting the imagination and exploring a variety of supplies and subjects. The theme of the annual Spring Arts Festival in April plays an important role in the theme of art students create throughout the year. As students explore tempera paint, watercolor, oil & chalk pastel, and more, they practice and explore skills that are built upon as they advance through these grade levels.

MIDDLE SCHOOL
Art in the Middle School is an elective class where students learn the basics of drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, and ceramics. The curriculum covers the elements of art, as well as the study of famous artists and art movements. Students are encouraged to exercise and grow their creative side while enjoying the relaxed atmosphere in the art studio, and experiment with skills and materials. Art opportunities after school are also an option for Middle School students.

UPPER SCHOOL
Our art courses at Brookstone start with a Foundations of Art that is open to all students.  We also offer advanced art course choices in Drawing, Painting, Ceramics/Pottery, Sculpture and Advanced Placement Art and Design.   The courses are focused on the elements and principles of design, technical skill, exploration of materials and concepts, cross-cultural connections through analysis of art history, and learning how to build a successful portfolio.
